Gourmet fruit baskets quickly emerged as a way to deliver a gift of special items that the recipient would never buy for himself, but would probably enjoy. Depending on the tastes and experiences of the recipient, gourmet fruit gift baskets can contain almost anything imaginable. In addition to the usual assortment (high-quality, peak-of-ripeness fruits; rare aged cheeses; or jams and jellies), gourmet bottled items -- such as chestnuts in brandy, various wines and assorted breads and crackers ?- are often the dominating items in the basket.

Canned meats and fine smoked fish from around the world have made their way into many of today's fruit baskets from numerous suppliers. Delicious spreads and exotic foreign foods quite often make their first appearances in holiday gift baskets.

Popular gourmet gift baskets differ from culture to culture, especially in the melting pot of America. There are so many different religious and sectarian groups living in America that a large number of extremely isolated manufacturers of gourmet fruit gift baskets have sprung up to cater to these diverse groups. You'll find stores in ethnic neighborhoods, offering select items in baskets designed for the people in the area or even the tourists who come by to shop there. In one neighborhood you'll find gourmet fruit gift baskets that contain a selection of caviars and wines from Russia, not available elsewhere. In other neighborhoods you can find items not available anywhere else -- at any price -- unless you purchase the gift basket they were packaged in.

Gourmet fruit gift baskets have become such a hot item that many ethnic items are launched in America through the fruit basket business. There are mail order companies and websites that cater to individual groups of people and offer them items they haven't sampled since they left the old country. Through the Internet it is actually possible to contact small companies throughout the world that will ship gourmet fruit gift baskets, full of specific items from the very towns that immigrants used to live in before they made the trip to America. Imagine how it must feel to receive a basket of gourmet goodies from the small town in Germany, or Spain or Russia that you were born in. No other gift and no other form of gift giving are as personal and as satisfying as a gourmet fruit gift basket, chock-full of items that cater to the specifically individual tastes and background of the recipient..

There is almost no occasion, event or holiday gift that can't be properly addressed by sending some kind of fruit basket. From humble beginnings as a device fruit growers used to expand their business beyond supermarkets, fruit baskets have become one of the most popular categories of gifts in the country. No longer is this merely a device for fruit growers to send out more of their freshly grown produce at retail prices.

Nowadays, many of the items advertised, sold and shipped as fruit baskets contain hardly any fruit at all. Fruit baskets have matured -- come of age, as they say -- and it's possible to satisfy a gift giving need by ordering a fruit basket from any of literally thousands of suppliers across the country. You'll find that many of the local retail stores in town have some form of fruit basket deal to ship their wares, if not all year round, then certainly at appropriate holiday times. For at least two major gift-giving holidays, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day, fruit baskets surpassed flowers as the gift of choice on a national basis several years ago and have kept on growing ever since.

Built around themes for the holidays, fruit baskets can contain any type, and almost any amount of high quality merchandise designed to make the receiver very happy upon arrival. Christmas baskets specializing in winter fruits -- especially popular in the colder, Eastern states -- have been stuffing Santa's bag for many years. Valentine's Day brings chocolate-dipped goodies, especially cherries and strawberries, which really say "I Love You" to that special person in your life.

Baby baskets send the freshest of fruits for the new parents along with a few bottles of a healthy brand of baby food and other appropriate gifts for the newborn. For Mother's Day, children delight in sending a choice selection of gourmet items to the woman who gave them life. And there's no better way to say "I Love You, Dad" on Father's Day than by sending a basket brimming with Dad's favorite items and a few new ones as well.

Even giant corporations have gotten accustomed to sending out appropriately stuffed fruit baskets to their highly valued clients and special employees, instead of more traditional fare. Fruit baskets containing all sorts of items have become the easiest and most personal way people can give something to one another that is almost always appreciated. In addition to being one of the easiest and most satisfying experiences, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's ever returned a fruit basket for any reason whatsoever..

A Look at Edible Fruit Baskets

By their very nature, all fruit baskets, especially the original ones, qualify as edible fruit baskets. After all, when a fruit basket was filled with nothing but fruit, by definition everything in them was edible and therefore qualified as an edible fruit basket. But with today's more competitive marketplace, fruit baskets have grown to include much more than food items. In an attempt to differentiate them from fruit baskets that contain non-food items, the term edible fruit baskets was born ? again nobody knows exactly where, or when, or who first used it ? to signify a fruit basket containing only items that could only be eaten. Nothing drinkable; no wines, no organic juices were included, nor were any jams or jellies or spreads. Essentially, edible fruit baskets don't contain anything that should be left over after a short-lived, sumptuous feast of its contents.

Some people get confused by the term "edible fruit basket." They think that the basket itself is edible ? and in some cases they are correct. There are types of edible fruit baskets where the basket is weaved out of soft edible grasses or noodles and even coated, sometimes, with chocolate or other spreads to make them more palatable. Granted, this type of basket is usually only offered in certain countries of Southeast Asia and does not account for the confusion here in America regarding the phrase, but it does lend some mystery to the term.

In general, edible fruit baskets are built around food themes to make them more attractive to the public. For example, certain edible fruit baskets contain a selection of organic fruit, combined with small amounts of organic nuts and candies. Others concentrate on foods from certain areas of the world such as France, Italy or China. Whatever can be combined into one edible fruit basket and be thought of as a special treat will be made available to a public willing to try them. The single most popular edible fruit basket today has to do with health. Packed with perfect fresh organic fruit, granola, nuts, raisins, sugar-free candy, trail mix and a bounty of other items all created from the prospective of eating healthy foods, this edible fruit basket outsells all other edible fruit baskets almost three-to-one..

With Christmas gift baskets, there is no need to brave the mall at the last minute. They are sure to stand out under the tree, and to be a unique and memorable gift. When we think of gift giving, Christmas is probably the holiday that comes to mind first for most people. Thanks to the Internet, it.s possible to do most (or even all) your shopping online. Not only can you shop in your pajamas from the comfort of your living room, but you don.t need to brave the weather or try to find a parking spot within walking distance of a mall.Christmas gift baskets come in a variety of sizes and shapes and with a variety of contents. Often, instead of a regular basket, Christmas baskets are in the shape of a sleigh, a stocking, a Christmas tree, or other seasonal icons. Some have themes such as .The Twelve Days of Christmas,. and contain twelve varieties of chocolates or coffees. Others have seasonal contents like gingerbread or peppermint candies. In addition to a variety of contents, Christmas gift baskets come in a variety of price ranges, which can be important if you have a long list of people to shop for. Small baskets start for under $20 and often contain a couple food items and possibly a Christmas ornament or other seasonal gift item. Smaller, less expensive baskets are perfect for gift exchanges at the office or school. At the other end of the range are huge baskets over $100. These are often full of goodies and other items, and make great gifts to a whole family. Of course, there is a wide range in between as well.Gift baskets are also a great seasonal gift for friends and relatives that don.t celebrate Christmas. Instead of a Christmas gift basket, consider a Hanukkah gift basket. Make sure to take into account any special dietary requirements. There are kosher gift baskets, too! With such a wide variety, it is nearly impossible not to find a Christmas gift basket for everyone. Most online retailers can ship to other locations, so getting gifts to your friends and loved ones in time for the holiday is easy, too. Happy Holidays!.

What's an item that can help you organize every room in your home, helps create the appearance that you're a tidy housekeeper (even if you're not), and perks up your decorating scheme?Need another hint?It comes in all shapes, sizes, colors and materials and can be found in many local retail stores, including craft stores and discount retailers, and at flea markets and craft shows and well basically it's a universal item found all over the world. You probably have one right now in your home. It's a basket! So the next time someone gives you one filled with anything from sweets to colognes, don't discard it once you've used what's in it. Once the items are gone, the basket's job has only just begun. Read onward to find out how to use this wonderful item in every room in your house. For instance, in the kitchen, you can use hanging wall pocket baskets, which have flat backs, to store dry sponges and scrubbers as well as pot holders, oven mitts, dry dish rags and spare kitchen hand towels. And in your family room or den, you might use a deep, round or cylindrical shaped basket on the coffee table to hold television or other electronic remotes. A basket made of rags will slide without scratching (or put a doily underneath). (Imagine never losing the television remote again because you have an assigned place to put it in full view--that blends in with your home decor.)And in the bedroom, a wicker hamper with a lid in the closet can store extra pillows and keep them dust-free. If you see openings in the wicker slats or don't like your linens snagging on the inside of the basket, line the hamper with a sheet or large gallon trash bag.The ideas for using these globally designed and sold products that have been around for decades are infinite. And probably no product is so practical and useful as well as beautiful. (And modestly priced too!) Baskets are handmade works of art that are functional. Imagine serving drinks on that glorious one-of-a-kind painting you have hanging on the wall. Not! But with baskets you can literally put your most unique artwork into daily usage and daily view.Baskets come in many sizes, shapes and materials such as willow, rattan, bamboo, rope, palm leaf, wire and rags. And many are adorned with metal garnishes, dried coco flowers, gugo vine handles and more. It's that variety of qualities that make baskets so easy to organize AND decorate with simultaneously. And you don't have to take a basket as it comes. Dress up any of your baskets by gluing on your own garnishments. For example, craft stores sell all types of trinkets you can glue on your baskets. Be creative. Try personalizing your baskets with anything from buttons to plastic candy canes to miniature toy figures or mini cloth stockings. You could also buy miniature toys and figurines from typical large discount retailers or smaller dollar stores. (What fun to do by yourself or with your children). And when you're done, you can still put that basket to work in an organizational function in your home---only it will have twice the value to you (the purchase price plus the priceless sentimental value).(c) 2004 Karen Fritscher-Porter.

Noni fruit has gained worldwide notoriety in recent years for its health benefits, but also as a result of how those benefits have been exaggerated. Noni fruit is packed with nutrients ? some well known, others more mysterious ? that can help you to live a healthier, longer life. Several animal studies have shown that noni fruit can help to reduce tumors, enhance the immune system, and relieve pain.Scientists in both the public and private sectors have widely demonstrated that the health benefits of noni fruit, while often wildly exaggerated, are not to be dismissed.Noni fruit comes from the noni tree. When ripe, a noni fruit is about the size and color of the inside of a pear. It contains many seeds and has a distinctive, pungent odor. It is soft and dripping with juice. The tree grows up to 30 feet tall in a large variety of habitats: volcanic terrains, lava-strewn coasts, clearings, and limestone crops. Its resiliency has allowed it to spread from its native Southeast Asia to neighboring India and the Pacific Islands, and as far as New Zealand, Australia, and South America. Its leaves are large, dark green, shiny, and deeply veined. Its small white flowers give rise to fruit that is bright green when young, and yellow or white when ripe.Over 2,000 years ago, the inhabitants of what is now known as the Polynesian Islands domesticated the noni tree. They used all parts of the tree as food, medicine, and dye. It is said to treat many maladies, including constipation, diarrhea, skin inflammation, infection, mouth sores, fever, contusions, and sprains. Many other cultures have used noni fruit as well. For example, the Chinese have used it for the digestive system, kidneys, heart, and liver.Today, noni fruit is available in a wide variety of formats, including juices, powders, capsules, even soaps and shampoos. Used in conjunction with modern medicine, the noni fruit can be a valuable health supplement..

Fresh Fruit Baskets

From their inception, fresh fruit baskets were exactly that ? attractive baskets filled with fresh fruit, carefully chosen and expertly arranged to appeal to customers worldwide. They gained popularity as more and more couples motored through the countryside with the advent of the automobile stopping at roadside fruit stands displaying their freshly picked wares. Somebody, somewhere, packaged a selection of items into one attractive display, placed it in a wicker basket and a trend was started. Before long, fresh fruit baskets started creeping up in popularity behind flowers as the gift of choice.

As time went by, companies began to spring up whose sole function was to purchase just the right products at the peak of their freshness to be marketed as fresh fruit baskets and sold as gifts all across the country. While some of these companies later morphed into growers of their own product simply to control the prices and the quality of the items they placed into their fruit baskets, others remained solely as purchasers of quality produce and marketers of different fresh fruit baskets. When the market got saturated, new ideas were needed to propel sales and profits along in a positive manner and the "Fruit of the Month Club" concept was born. Essentially a monthly fresh fruit basket delivered to your house each and every month on a contract basis, fruit of the month clubs sprang up in mail order catalogues all over the country. Gone were the attractive baskets, and the beautiful displays, but essentially the product was the same ? fresh, quality product shipped directly from the grower to your door, in a safe and timely fashion so the precious fruit inside remains at the peak of its freshness when it arrives.

Among the vast array of products marketed as fruit baskets today, you can still find a simple, honest, fresh fruit basket to send out as a gift. Priced for as little fifteen dollars or ranging into the hundreds, fresh fruit baskets still maintain their lead over all other gifts. If one company could monopolize the entire business, perhaps by claiming a patent, the gross revenues would be larger than the total proceeds generated by many of the planet's developing nations. A simple idea, started by someone that has evolved into one of the most successful businesses in the world, fruit baskets are here to stay. And even with the way the simple fresh fruit basket has evolved, the original is still the most popular and probably still the best..
